A valuable
community service has been provided by the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation
for the past 17 years with its award-winning Educational Scholarship
Program. This program provides an opportunity for outstanding
high school and college students who want to pursue careers
in science or medicine to work in the research laboratory,
observe human surgery and make rounds with physicians.
Initiated
in 1980, the Educational Scholarship Program provides practical
experience as well as financial support to students desiring
to become physicians, basic scientists, veterinarians, or
other professionals in related fields of medical research.
The program employs students at the high school and college
levels to actively participate in the clinical and research
activities conducted by our organization.
All students
must have and maintain a good scholastic standing. They are
supervised by a professional scientist at the Ph.D. level
and/or a highly qualified technician while receiving extensive
training and experience in the laboratory. Through the program,
they learn a variety of laboratory techniques, observe human
surgery and attend rounds with physicians and staff on a 42
bed oncology unit at St. Joseph Hospital. The students are
paid by the foundation for their work, with the understanding
that these funds are earmarked to defray their educational
expenses.
Students
have rotated through the program from the following universities:
Baylor, Boston College, Brown, De Paul, Duke, Harvard, Hollins
College, Houston, Justus Liebig (W. Germany), Loyola, LSU,
Northwestern, Oklahoma, Princeton, Rhodes College, Rice, SMU,
TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech., Tulane, UCLA, USC,
and Washington.
Local
high schools represented include: Clear Creek, Clements,
Cy Fair, Cypress Falls, Dulles, Kinkaid, Kempner, Kingwood,
Lamar, St. Agnes, St. John's, South Houston, Spring Woods,
Strake-Jesuit, Stratford, Westbury and Yates.
