The CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research was established in 1969 by
surgical oncologist, Dr. John S. Stehlin, for the express
purpose of conducting basic research that can be applied directly
to improving the treatment of the patient with cancer. All
research is clinically oriented.
A unique
benefit to patients at the Stehlin & deIpolyi Oncology
Clinic is their immediate and ongoing access to the research
being conducted at the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research,
located in its own 18,000 square foot facility on the 12 city
block campus of St. Joseph Hospital in the heart of downtown
Houston. Patients are not charged for these studies, but have
immediate access to new treatment protocols developed as a
result of this patient-focused research and treatment.
While
the Stehlin & deIpolyi Oncology Clinic is a private medical
practice and the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research a
public charity, the two organizations share an important and
synergistic relationship. Physicians associated with the clinic
donate their time and expertise to the work of the Foundation.
At the same time, innovative research and treatment methods
developed in the research laboratory are often applied by
physicians on the Stehlin & deIpolyi clinical team in
the treatment of patients with cancer.
