Longevity
is a Key to Success
Laboratory Supervisor Dana Vardeman is quick to point to
the harmonious collaboration of the Stehlin staff over the
past 30 years as one of the key determinants in the labs
breath-taking success with 9-NC and emerging
Camptothecin derivatives: When doctors and researchers
are able to grow with each other over the course of 10-20
years, the depth and rapidity of communication enables a degree
of collaboration and unity which most laboratories never experience,
says Vardeman.
Quick Facts about the Staff:
The average tenure for Stehlin Foundation doctors,
researchers
and employees is 16 years
Eighteen team members have been with Stehlin for over
20 years
One new technician is joining the staff this year
Dr. Cao Oversees and conducts the synthesis and purification
of
drugs; modifying compounds to make better esters (esters are
superior drug delivery forms
see Dr.
Liehrs explanation).
Dr. Giovanella Oversees and conduscts the determination
of
drug activity and toxicity (in vitro assistant is John Mendoza,
in
vivo assistant is Tony Kozielski)
Dr. Liehr Oversees and conducts tests measuring the
absorption,
metabolism, excretion, and distribution of active esters in
the
body; the conversion into active form; cleavage of ester pro-drugs
(active forms). Dr. Liehr has received an NIH grant to investigate
the role of estrogens in cancer.
