Golfers Against

The 2000
Golfers Against Cancer events in Kingwood, held Nov 18-20,
reached a number of milestones in their four-year history
of raising funds for cancer research. This years efforts
raised $125,000 for the Stehlin Foundation, the highest total
of any previous year.
The Nov 20 tournament had the largest participation ever with
more than 550 golfers participating on all five courses at
Kingwood Country Club and Deerwood Golf Club. The Nov 18 dinner,
held at the Humble Civic Center, was attended by 850 people
who bid on more than 400 auction items raising $250,000. In
all, Golfers Against Cancers total contribution to cancer
research now exceeds $1.5 million.
Sally Roberts, whose late husband Dave Roberts was the inspiration
behind the tournament, said they could not have reached these
goals without the help of so many. The list of supporters
is so long that it is impossible to thank everyone,
she said. But we do want to acknowledge the special
help of more than 100 volunteers who played such an important
role at all the events. Golfers Against Cancer co-chairman
Pat Weston said he was pleased with the tournament and auction
proceeds, which generated $800,000 to be divided with other
research foundations. In addition to assisting the Stehlin
Foundation this year, Golfers Against Cancer will assist Capcure
Foundation, M.D. Anderson and the Susan G. Komen Foundation,
Weston said.
Westons co-chairman Bobby Jones added that the real
heroes are the researchers for these foundations. Theyre
the ones who will some day find a cure for cancer, he
said. Jones said GAC is proud to play a small part in this
noble effort. Its a great legacy for our good
friend Dave Roberts who, we feel, would be proud of the progress
and success of this tournament that he inspired.
Special
Honoree Cancer has touched the lives of people everywhere
and the Deerwood GAC is no exception. GACs inaugural
years special honoree was Mike Longpre who won his battle
against brain cancer in 1997. Longpre is a golf pro at Deerwood.
Board member Max Mountjoy was this years special honoree.
He contracted melanoma and has successfully beaten it.
Persons
of the Year
In addition to the special honoree, Golfers Against Cancer
each year acknowledge a Person of the Year for
extraordinary contributions to the GAC cause. This years
Person of the Year was unanimously awarded to Pat and Ardy
Weston, who were honored as corecipients, according to Bobby
Jones, former recipient of the Person of the Year award. No
one worked harder or contributed more to this years
success than these two, Jones said.
