The Four Seasons Hotel Houston announced that CHRISTUS St.Joseph
Hospital is the title sponsor of the 2000 Terry Fox Run. CHRISTUS
St.Joseph Hospital contributed $25,000 to become the title
sponsors of the 2000 Terry Fox Run, held this year on Sept.
16 in downtown Houston. Run proceeds fund research at the
Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research.
"We
thank CHRISTUS St.Joseph Hospital for their generous support
of the Terry Fox Run, "says Tiffany Kendall, manager
of public relations for the Four Seasons Hotel Houston. "Because
of sponsorships like theirs, the Foundation continues to conduct
groundbreaking research that saves lives."
This is
the 19th year the Four Seasons Hotel Houston has hosted the
Terry Fox Run in Houston. More than 1,500 people ran or walked
in last year s event, raising more than $43,500 for
cancer research.
As the
revitalization of downtown continues and Enron Field celebrates
its grand opening with the Astros 2000 season, race organizers
anticipate the largest race to date.
"We
have been involved with the run for many years as volunteers
and sponsors, and are proud to return this year as title sponsor
of the 2000 Terry Fox Run, "says Robin Phillips, vice
president of marketing for the gulf coast region of CHRISTUS
Health." We also sponsored the run because it takes place
in the growing downtown community in which we serve."
The 2000
Terry Fox Run celebrates the 20th anniversary of Terry Fox
s historic Marathon of Hope. In March 1977,eighteen-year-old
Terry Fox lost his leg to bone cancer. He was so affected
by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided
to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Calling
it his "Marathon of Hope," he ran an average of
26 miles a day for 143 days. At mile 3,339,Terry fell victim
to lung cancer and collapsed.
Foxs
marathon touched Isadore Sharp, the current chairman of Four
Seasons Hotels and Resorts. Sharp vowed to organize a yearly
fundraising run in Terry s name, to continue his goal
to fight cancer. In June of 1981, Terry died one month
short of his 23rd birthday.
It was
1980 when this young man shared with the world his dream of
finding a cure for cancer. Since then, the Terry Fox Run has
become the largest single day fundraising event for cancer
research in the world. More than one million participants
gather each year at an estimated 4,800 run sites in 60 countries
around the world. Through these efforts, Terry s dream
of finding a cure for cancer will be realized.
Sponsorships
for the 2000 Terry Fox Run are still available. For more information,
