Golfers Against Cancer donated $50,000 to The Stehlin Foundation
for Cancer Research in a check presentation ceremony held
March 13 at the Foundation office.
The organization
raised the money at its third annual golf tournament week-end
held Nov.20-22 in Kingwood, Texas. The overall tournament
raised more than $500,000 for cancer research. This year s
tournament weekend is Nov.18-20.
The Foundation
has been a beneficiary of the tournament since Golfers Against
Cancer s inception in 1997. Golfers Against Cancer s
donation helps fund research for the anticancer potential
of camptothecin.
"Golfers
Against Cancer chose to donate a portion of the funds we raised
to the Stehlin Foundation because the camptothecin drug rubitecan
has saved lives," says Sally Roberts, board member for
Golfers Against Cancer in charge of choosing beneficiaries.
"Our own board member, Gordon Findlay, is just one example.
He was treated with rubitecan five years ago and now is living
a healthy, active life."
Golfers
Against Cancer set a fund-raising goal of $1 million for its
fourth annual tournament. The organization has increased the
amount it has raised for cancer research every year since
the tournament s inception -from $80,000 in 1997, to
$300,000 in 1998 and to more than $500,000 in 1999.
The Fourth
Annual Golfers Against Cancer Tournament Weekend includes
a gala/auction on Nov.18,pro-am/ celebrity golf tournament
on Nov.19 and official golf tournament on Nov.20.For more
