Millennium
Gala Celebrates Two Foundation Anniversaries
 |
"We
are celebrating 30 years of the Stehlin Foundation's research
victories."
Jerry Simon |
This years
Friends of the Stehlin Foundation gala celebrates the 30th
anniversary of the first cancer experiment conducted at the
Stehlin Foundation lab and the 20th anniversary of the Friends
fundraising events. The chairpersons for such an auspicious
occasion are Lisa and Jerome Simon. The 2000 gala will take
place on Saturday, Nov.4 at the Westin Galleria Hotel.
The Foundation
and gala committee are off to a great start. SuperGen, Inc.,a
leading pharmaceutical company dedicated to products that
treat life- threatening diseases, particularly cancer, announced
a $100,000 commitment to underwrite the 2000 gala.
"We
are extremely pleased with SuperGens generosity, "Jerry
says. "The Stehlin Foundation is known for committing
approximately 80 to 85 percent of every dollar to cancer research.
SuperGen s contribution allows 100 percent of the gala
dollars raised to go to Stehlin s world-renowned cancer
research."
Jerry
has been involved with the Stehlin Foundation for more than
10 years. Soon after Jerry s mother died of lung cancer
in 1985,Kim Wheless, current chairman of the Stehlin board,
introduced him to the organization and its mission. At the
time, Jerry and Kim worked together at Tanglewood Bank. Ever
since, Jerry has been involved with the Foundation and chaired
the 1993 gala and the entertainment committee for several
years.
Lisa joins
Jerry with great enthusiasm in planning this years gala.
Lisa currently serves as chairman of the Fort Bend Chamber
of Commerce and has been involved in numerous community organizations
including successful fund raising events.
"My
mother is a cancer survivor so I m dedicated to this
gala for personal reasons, "Lisa says. "And, even
if my mother had not been touched by cancer, friends, relatives
and acquaintances have been affected by this disease. We want
to fight cancer today so that our children and younger generations
have a cure."
Both Jerry
and Lisa are native Houstonians and work in the banking industry.
Jerry spearheads trust and investment services for Northern
Trust Bank and Lisa serves as chairman of the board for Southern
National Bank, helping the organization expand its operations
in the greater Houston area. Whether inside or out of the
boardroom, Lisa and Jerry are on the same team when it comes
to the Foundation and its mission to find a cure for cancer.
"We
are celebrating 30 years of the Foundations research
victories with an eye toward the future and finding a cure
for cancer, "Jerry says. "And,the Foundation could
not have achieved such success without the Friends and 20
years of dedicated fundraising efforts."
"Next
month we will announce the theme for this years gala,
which incorporates the two anniversaries," Lisa adds.
"We look forward to a successful and fun-filled event,
so stay tuned for details."
