Houston
Endowment Continues Support of Educational Scholarship Program
 |
| Mr. Domingo
Barrios and Ms. Marissa Eubanks of the Houston Endowment
meet Stehlin summer interns. |
Again
this year, outstanding high school and college students
traded swim trunks for lab coats as they joined the Stehlin
Foundation’s fight against cancer.
And for the third year, the Houston Endowment has been a
major contributor to Stehlin’s award-winning Educational
Scholarship Program. Mr. Domingo Barrios, a grant officer
for Houston Endowment Inc. and his associate Ms. Marissa
Eubanks recently visited the Stehlin lab for a round table
discussion and interviews with this
year’s interns.
Stehlin’s Educational Scholarship Program has given
more than 250 students invaluable hands-on experience in
the front lines of cancer research and treatment over the
past 23 years. In 2003, 15 interns devoted their summer
to finding a cure for cancer while defining their career
paths and fields of study.
“One of my favorite things about this internship program
was the emphasis on
education,” said Grace Cho, a junior at Harvard University.
“Assisting Dr. Markides, with research in the organic
chemistry lab has enabled me to learn so much more than
I could at any other internship.”
Constantine Markides, Ph.D., a Stehlin researcher is enthusiastic
about the internship program. “I love teaching, I
think it’s fun,” Markides said. “It’s
refreshing working with bright students who have so much
enthusiasm in their work.”
Competition for an internship is rigorous and the program
has a strong track record of encouraging and assisting alumni
to continue their education.
