Dr. Joachim Georg Liehr passed away at his home in Houston,
Texas, on April 8, 2003, after battling late-stage pancreatic
cancer for nearly 17 months. He was 60
years old. Joachim dedicated most of his scientific life
to a better understanding of the etiology and mechanisms
of strogen-induced cancers, and his pioneering work for
nearly three decades has yielded novel mechanistic insights.
His discoveries serve as the basis for designing better
strategies for the prevention and treatment of human
hormonal cancers.
As many of us came to know him, Joachim was a renowned researcher,
an independent and innovative thinker, a straightforward
and spirited scholar, a compassionate human being, and most
of all, a profound gentleman. His knowledge, creativity,
insight, and tenacity will be missed and remembered by many
of his friends and colleagues. His caring personality, courage,
and love for science, as many of us witnessed during the
very difficult times while he battled pancreatic cancer,
touched
everyone associated with him. The memories of his wonderful
and inspiring personality both as a researcher and as a
human being will be with us always.
