tournament has been the most successful yet over
500 golfers raising more than $900,000 for Houston-area
cancer research organizations. |
Kevin
Longpre played for his brother. When he won, he donated his
winnings to cancer research in his brothers name.
My brother Mike was the honoree in the Golfers Against
Cancer tournament four years ago. I have played every
year, looking forward to the moment when I could win and give
the winning purse back in Mikes name. Kevin was
glowing with satisfaction in the accomplishment: Today
was the day this was our year.
This years Fifth Annual Golfers Against Cancer tournament
was the largest and most successful to date. On Monday, November
19, 2001, over 500 golfers and their sponsors raised over
$900,000 for cancer research.
A team from the Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research played
the Island Course, while a team from the Stehlin
de Ipolyi Oncology Clinic played the Marsh Course.
The Stehlin Foundation is a sponsor and beneficiary of the
tournament.
The cause behind the tournament is a personal one for members
of Golfers Against Cancer. The group formed in March of 1997
when they learned one of their golfing buddies, Dave Roberts,
was diagnosed with cancer. Members of the Saturday morning
golf group that Roberts played in quickly rallied to help.
The tournament was held later that autumn and raised $80,000
for Stehlin Foundation, the original beneficiary.
Today, the Golfers Against Cancer organization has major sponsors
such as Continental Airlines and The Houston BMW Group. Preceding
each years tournament is a dinner and silent auction
for golfers and non-golfers alike.
The proceeds from the tournament and auction, plus matching
corporate funds, will be tallied in the coming weeks. Joining
the Stehlin Foundation as beneficiaries are several other
Houston-area cancer-fighting organizations, including: CapCURE
the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate;
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Houston Affiliate;
and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Initial estimates place the final amount at well beyond $900,000.
This years proceeds will be over ten times the initial
amount raised in 1997.
The Stehlin Foundation extends its gratitude to the many people
who comprise Golfers Against Cancer cochairs
Bobby Jones and Pat Weston; Sally Roberts; Pete DeLongchamps
of the Houston BMW Group; Gordon Bethune and Continental Airlines;
the Houston Golf Association; and the many other corporate
sponsors, friends, survivors and other supporters of the Fifth
Annual Golfers Against Cancer Event.
