From the
Desk of Dr. John Stehlin
Dear Friends,
For me, 2001 was a year of sharp focus. As our country regained
its equilibrium, many of us realigned priorities. Success
in our careers, financial rewards, travel and hobbies are
wonderful things. But I see an increased focus on friends
and family, and a renewed appreciation for each precious day.
Your response and generosity to the Foundation has been touching
and encouraging. Never have we felt such a sense of urgency
and optimism about the cancerfighting work our scientists,
physicians and patients do together.
I am particularly grateful for the faithful leadership of
the Stehlin Friends and supporters. My heart-felt thanks to
Bobby and Sally Anderson and all of the Friends for a tremendously
successful Gala. You lavished your creativity and hard work
on an event that more than one happy donor called the
best party of the year. In a year when all sorts of
charitable organizations felt the pinch of donations deferred
to pressing needs elsewhere, the 2001 Friends Gala raised
an amazing $710,000 for life-saving cancer research, treatment
and education.
The Terry Fox Run held the weekend after September
11th drew more participants and raised more money than
ever before $80,000. Many expressed gratitude for the
opportunity the run gave them to do something positive and
tangible to help others.
Building on more than 30 years of camaraderie, the Stehlin
team is developing newer and faster research methods. There
is much good news to report, however space limits us to sharing
just two exciting milestones: the ground-breaking in vitro
models of eight cell lines with 4% human serum albumin, and
the test results of 9- Nitro-20(S)-Camptothecins 100%
growthrate inhibition.
Credit for these gratifying results goes equally to teamwork
in the lab and the creative, hard-working supporters of the
Stehlin Foundation.
Warm Regards,
John S. Stehlin, Jr., M.D.
