Golfers
Against Cancer (GAC), a group of Kingwood-based golfers
dedicated to raising money for cancer research, awarded
$100,000 to The Stehlin Foundation. The annual tournament
was held on November 21st, and involved over 550 golfers,
including 30 LPGA and Texas PGA professional golfers. The
2005 event was the most successful yet, raising over 2.5
million dollars!
The cause behind the tournament is a personal one for members
of Golfers Against Cancer. The group formed in March of
1997 when they learned one of their golfing buddies, Dave
Roberts, was diagnosed with cancer. Members of the Saturday
morning golf group that Roberts played in quickly rallied
to help. The tournament was held later that autumn and raised
$80,000 for Stehlin Foundation, the original beneficiary.
Today, the Golfers Against Cancer organization has major
sponsors such as Continental Airlines and The Houston BMW
Group. Preceding each years tournament is a dinner
and silent auction for golfers and non-golfers alike.
From a modest beginning in 1997 when they raised $85,000,
this year's contribution brings their total to over $10
million in direct and matching funds.
The GAC Golf Tournament and Gala is held every year in November
on the Monday prior to Thanksgiving. To learn more about
participating or what can be done to help, contact the group's
Web site at golfersagainstcancer.org.
The Stehlin Foundation extends its gratitude to the many
people who comprise Golfers Against Cancer
cochairs Bobby Jones and Pat Weston; Sally Roberts; Pete
DeLongchamps of the Houston BMW Group; Gordon Bethune and
Continental Airlines; the Houston Golf Association; and
the many other corporate sponsors, friends, survivors and
other supporters of the Sixth Annual Golfers Against Cancer
Event.
